District 9
- Jesuit – A 14-3 season in 2021 will likely repeat in 2022 with the Tigers being a serious contender for best boys team in the area this year. They are still stacked and always backfill with outstanding young talent. As with 2021, keep an eye out for their matchup with 2A’s Plant, which is again likely to be the best game in 2022.
- Cypress Creek – The Coyotes are new to the TLR coverage area this season. They went 10-5 in 2021 with wins against Wiregrass, Sunlake, and Wesley Chapel. They were a young team last season, so we expect even better things from them in 2022. They likely won’t break into the upper tier of teams, but they should battle hard for the next level.
- Tampa Catholic – With a rough start to 2022 in the resignation of their coach days before practice was to begin, TLR hopes the Crusaders can pull things together and keep their matchups competitive. They went 6-10 in 2021, but graduated eight seniors. Things might get dicey for them this season. We’ll see.
- Wesley Chapel – The Wildcats didn’t have a great season in 2021, but did split their games against Tampa Catholic. We wouldn’t at all be surprised if they take over the #3 spot in District 9 this year. Their loss of nine seniors in 2021 – including some huge playmakers such as goalie Logan Saunders – won’t do them any favors, though.
District 10
- Berkeley Prep – Berkeley went 9-7 in 2021, which for them was a bit lower than they have been used to. They graduated a whopping 12 seniors, including a 4-year starter in goal as well as their top 2 goal-scorers. The 2022 version of the Buccaneers will certainly be a younger squad. The battles for the top spot between them and Northside Christian or Calvary Christian could prove interesting.
- Calvary Christian – The Warriors went 13-4 in 2021, with losses coming from Jesuit, SSES, and Berkeley (x2). That is impressive. Calvary also only lost 4 players in 2021. The caveat there is that one was their powerhouse & leading goal scorer and the other was a top Tampa-area goalie. This is always a well-coached team, so expect them to continue to battle every game.
- Northside Christian – 14-3 last season, the Mustangs certainly got better throughout the 2021 season. However, their biggest win was against Robinson in the playoffs. They graduated seven seniors in 2021, but they were already a young team, so perhaps relying on younger players will already be a part of their identity and won’t affect the team much in 2022.
- Osceola – Osceola went 8-5 last season, but unfortunately, didn’t really log an impressive win. Perhaps Robinson could see an improvement in 2022 and take over the 4th spot in District 10.
District 11
- Cardinal Mooney – The Cougars finished 2021 at 10-5 with losses coming from some of the best teams in the state. They lost 11 seniors in 2021, with 6 of those being playmakers. They were young in 2021, perhaps younger in 2022. Still, TLR has learned not to count them out. They continue to impress us, regardless of the players lost.
- St. Stephen’s – The Falcons impressed us in 2021, finishing in our overall 1A Boys Top 5. They enjoyed wins over some good opponents last season. But the losses of Cade Ryskamp on offense and Tyler Katchen in goal will definitely hurt them in 2022. We expect them to battle Admiral Farragut for the #2 spot with either team having a legitimate shot at it.
- Admiral Farragut – The Blue Jackets went 7-8 last season, with a couple very close losses. They graduated five seniors among a roster littered with much younger talent. We expect to see a very young Blue Jackets squad fighting hard, but struggling a bit in 2022 as their players mature and gain experience.
- Tampa Prep – The Terrapins lost only four seniors from last season, but only finished 4-6; their best wins coming against St. Pete Catholic and Bloomingdale. This 4th spot is really up for grabs in 2022. There are easily three or four teams that could take it.
