Final Poll

Plant (15-2) – Plant went wire-to-wire in this poll sitting at #1. They were crowned District 11 champions and are looking to again go deep into states in 2022.
Newsome (17-2) – The Wolves secured their 7th district title in a row and, like Plant, hope to make a solid run into regionals and beyond. Newsome started in this poll at #2 and held that spot all season.
Mitchell (14-3) – Mitchell earned a little redemption with their rematch win over rival Steinbrenner to take the District 10 title. This is a strong team and we are hoping for good things from them in regionals.
Steinbrenner (14-3) – The Warriors fell in the district 10 finals to Mitchell, but their FHSAA ranking certainly will secure them a spot in the at-large bids for 2A Region 3. Steinbrenner makes our predictions in this poll 100% for the top 4 teams.
Alonso (15-6) – Alonso knew the district title would be difficult with Plant in their way. The Ravens finished strong as runners-up in district 11 and may be looking for an at-large bid to continue playing in the regionals.

End of Regular Season

Plant (13-2) – The Panthers earned wins last week against Alonso, Berkeley Prep, and more importantly, Jesuit. Plant is definitely the team to beat in the TLR area. We believe Plant will not only take the district 11 crown, but go deep into the state playoffs again this year.
Newsome (15-2) – Newsome finished with wins against Lakeland, Robinson, and East Lake last week. They have certainly earned the top seed in district 9 and should once again be crowned district champs. We look forward to seeing them in regional play.
Steinbrenner (13-2) – The Warriors closed out regular season with a blowout win against Durant. They have earned the top seed in district 10 and will likely end up in a rematch against Mitchell for the district championship.
Mitchell (11-3) – Mitchell finished the regular season with wins over both Lakeland and Sickles. Mitchell earned the #2 seed in district 10 and should end up in the title game against Steinbrenner – which should be a great game.
Alonso (13-5) – The Ravens suffered a loss to Plant to begin week 8, but bounced back with wins over both Sunlake and Lakeland. Alonso is the #2 seed in district 11 behind Plant and will likely face the Panthers for the district championship.

Week 7

Plant (10-2) – Plant earned wins against Freedom and TLR’s #2 Newsome last week. The finish regular season with matchups against Alonso, Berkeley Prep, and Jesuit. As mentioned on the 1A poll, everyone should have April 8 circled for the Plant vs Jesuit game!
Newsome (12-2) – Newsome had some tough games in week 7. They earned a 1-goal win over Alonso, suffered a loss to TLR’s #1 Plant, and held on for a 2-goal win over TLR’s #4 Mitchell. They finish the regular season next week with games against Robinson and East Lake.
Steinbrenner (12-2) – The Warriors earned wins over Wharton, Bloomingdale, and Berkeley Prep last week to increase their win streak to 10 games. Their final matchup for regular season is against Durant on April 4.
Mitchell (9-3) – Mitchell split their two games last week, earning a landslide victory over Wesley Chapel and a 2-goal loss to TLR’s #2 Newsome. They will finish up regular season against Lakeland and Sickles.
Alonso (11-4) – The Ravens’ schedule down the stretch has proven difficult. Last week, they dropped a single-goal match to Newsome, and took wins over both Wharton and East Lake. April 4 they host TLR’s #1 Plant for probably their toughest of the season.

Week 6

Plant (8-2) – The Panthers took a lopsided win against Durant, then a tight home win against TLR’s 1A #2 Cardinal Mooney. We’re looking forward to Plant’s battle with Newsome on March 30. Should be good as well.
Newsome (10-1) – One win in week 6 over Freedom. Week 7 is busier with matches against TLR’s #5, #1, and #4 (Alonso, Plant, and Mitchell, respectively). Each of which should be exciting, entertaining games.
Steinbrenner (9-2) – The Warriors continue to look good this season as week 6 had them booking wins against Alonso, Wiregrass, and East Lake. The rest of their schedule is fairly weak, so we expect them to finish regular season with a 10 game win streak.
Mitchell (8-2) – The Mustangs earned wins over Cypress Creek and Alonso in week 6. Their next big matchup will come on April 1 on the road against #2 Newsome.
Alonso (9-3) – Alonso suffered two losses in week 6 – a 9-6 matchup against #3 Steinbrenner and a 12-9 loss to #4 Mitchell. There isn’t a team close enough to Alonso to take the 5th spot away from them, so they earn the right to hold onto it. Things don’t get easier as the Ravens face Newsome to begin week 7.

Week 5

Plant (6-2) – No changes due to spring break. Plant faces a tough opponent on Friday when Cardinal Mooney comes to town. TLR has that game circled for good reason. Catch it if you can.
Newsome (9-1) – No changes due to spring break. Only one game this week, March 23 against Freedom.
Steinbrenner (6-2) – No changes due to spring break. The Warriors host #5 Alonso on Tuesday. The new game time is 5:00. This is Tampa Lax Report’s Game of the Week. Join us there!
Mitchell (6-2) – No changes due to spring break. The Mustangs have games against Cypress Creek and Alonso this week. The Alonso game on March 25 is a battle for the #4 spot on this list and shouldn’t be missed!
Alonso (9-3) – No changes due to spring break. Games with week against both Steinbrenner and Mitchell. With wins, the Ravens would jump up to #3 in this poll!

Week 4

Plant (6-2) – We told you about Plant’s monster game against FL #3 Jupiter! Unfortunately, it ended with a single goal loss for Plant. The Panthers will enjoy some time off for spring break next week.
Newsome (9-1) – The Wolves log three more wins in week 4 against Bloomingdale, Bartow, and Tampa Catholic. They also enjoy spring break next week.
Steinbrenner (6-2) – The Warriors surprised a few people with a nice win over TLR’s former #3 team Mitchell in week 4, so that moves Steinbrenner up a notch. No more games for them until March 22 against Alonso, which should be another very good game.
Mitchell (6-2) – Mitchell split their two games last week with a close loss to Steinbrenner and an easy win against Land O’ Lakes. No games for them again until their March 23 game against Cypress Creek.
Alonso (9-1) – The Ravens logged two more wins in week 4 against both Palm Harbor University and Lakewood Ranch. Their next game after the break will be big – March 22 against TLR’s #3 Steinbrenner.

Week 3

Plant (6-1) – Three more easy wins (Bloomingdale, Robinson, and Wharton) for the Panthers in week 3. March 7, Plant travels to Jupiter for a game with statewide implications. Like Jesuit, Plant is filled with dangerous weapons and have replaced the hole left in the cage with a serious option in Busweiler – TLR’s Week 2 Player of the Week.
Newsome (6-1) – We said we had circled Newsome’s March 4 game against Cardinal Mooney – and that game certainly lived up to the billing as it came down to a double overtime goal by Mooney to settle it. Their next big game will be on March 30 against #1 Plant.
Mitchell (5-1) – The Mustangs had easy wins against both (previously unbeaten) East Lake and Forest in week 3. Plenty of fans have their game on March 8 against Steinbrenner to look forward to. TLR does as well. It’ll feature our #3 vs #4 and should be worth attending.
Steinbrenner (5-2) – Steinbrenner’s only losses so far were to #2 Newsome and #1 Plant. We’ll see if they are truly a #4 on March 8 when they host #3 Mitchell for what should be a great game.
Alonso (7-1) – The Ravens suffered a week 1 overtime loss to our 1A #4 Berkeley Prep, but have run the table since then. With their win over Calvary Christian and East Lake’s lopsided loss to Mitchell, Alonso jumps into the fifth spot on our 2A Top 5 list. They face a tough three-game stretch later against Steinbrenner, Newsome, and Mitchell. Wins anywhere in there would be impressive.

Week 2

Plant (3-1) – Two wins and a loss for the Panthers in week 2. The wins were against TLR’s #4 Steinbrenner and Florida #3 Ponte Vedra. Their loss was on the road against last year’s FHSAA 1A state champions Saint Andrew’s. It’s real hard to paint that as anything but hugely successful. Right now, Plant is the big fish in Tampa’s 2A pond, and we expect them to stay there. Their next crazy matchup comes on March 7 when they travel to Jupiter – last year’s FHSAA 2A state champions.
Newsome (5-0) – The Wolves were on cruise control last week with games against Wharton and Winter Haven. Newsome took those two games with a combined score of 44-1. As noted last week, Tampa Lax Report has circled their March 4 contest against Cardinal Mooney to get a better idea of how good Newsome is in 2022.
Mitchell (3-1) – Mitchell split their two games last week with a 13-9 loss to our 1A #1 Jesuit, then earned a 17-14 barn-burner win on the road against Riverview. Upstarts East Lake (#5 in this poll) will put their undefeated record on the line Tuesday when they travel to Mitchell for what should be a good game between two very good teams.
Steinbrenner (3-2) – Two lopsided games for the Warriors last week – a 20-2 loss to our #1 team Plant, then a 15-1 win over Robinson. We haven’t seen a close game out of Steinbrenner yet, so it really is hard for us to gauge this team so far. We’ll certainly know better if they drop any of their next 3 games before meeting up with #3 Mitchell on March 8.
East Lake (5-0) – As noted above, East Lake will have a serious opportunity to not only move up in this poll, but give the rest of the lacrosse world notice when they travel to TLR’s #3 Mitchell on Tuesday, March 1. Tampa Lax Report is hoping for a clean, close game from these two teams. If you have free time Tuesday, you could do worse than to catch this game live, no doubt.

Week 1

Plant (1-0) – The Panthers will likely coast until their road game against FLN 1A #1 Saint Andrew’s on 2/25. Plant is definitely on track to repeat their success from last season, so we don’t see many in Tampa that can match them. Their toughest games will come from state powerhouses from outside the TLR coverage area like the aforementioned Saint Andrew’s along with both Ponte Vedra, and Jupiter. TLR powerhouses Newsome, Mooney, and Jesuit would likely take issue with that statement and will certainly be ready for their chances as well!
Newsome (3-0) – TLR only sees maybe three games on Newsome’s schedule that could prove to be tight: 3/4 against Cardinal Mooney, 3/30 against Plant, and maybe 4/1 against Mitchell. If they drop any of the other 12 games, we’d be surprised. But if you want to catch good games, circle those three dates and try to attend one or two. You won’t be disappointed. This team is very good.
Mitchell (2-0) – The Mustangs earned wins against both Calvary Christian and Berkeley Prep last week. Look at their matchup against Jesuit on 2/22 for a real gauge of what to expect from Mitchell this season. We think Jesuit is the better team, but if Mitchell is able to keep it close, they can win over some doubters.
Steinbrenner (2-1) – Steinbrenner coasted to easy wins last week against both Freedom and Calvary Christian, but found themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided game against #2 Newsome. It doesn’t give us much to judge them on yet, but we’ll have a better idea on 3/8 when the Warriors face #3 Mitchell in a District 10 matchup.
East Lake (3-0) – The Eagles’ 3-0 start is impressive enough to put them into the Top 5. They beat Osceola, Northeast, and Bartow. We are interested to see how East Lake handles their 3/1 game against #3 Mitchell to see where they really fall among the middle-top teams in 2A.

Pre-Season

Plant – The Panthers enjoyed a record-breaking season in 2021, advancing all the way to the State Semi-Finals. Their only two losses coming from Ponte Vedra and eventual state champion Jupiter. Plant loses eight seniors, but none harder to fill than current Cornell goalie Wyatt Knust. If the Plant defense can stay on top of things, the Panthers may be eyeing another run into the playoffs.
Newsome – The Wolves finished 2021 with an impressive 16-3 record – with all three losses coming from Plant. Newsome has been and continues to be one of the best teams in the Tampa area. They lost six players from last year, some of which were stat leaders in the area. Either way, Newsome always finds players to step in right away and contribute.
Mitchell – The Mustangs had a breakout season in 2021, finishing an impressive 13-2. Since they only lose two seniors from last season, it’s not far-fetched to expect an even better season from them this year. Watch their game against Steinbrenner for a real-world indicator of how they are doing.
Steinbrenner – Steinbrenner finished 12-4 last season, splitting their games with Mitchell. The Warriors lost a fair chunk of their offense output due to graduating seniors, but retain 20 players from 2021. Both Steinbrenner and Mitchell are well-coached teams that always seem to get the most out of their players.
Lakeland – The 14-6 Lakeland squad lost some major players on offense in 2021, but still has some weapons ready for 2022. While we don’t see them at the same level as Newsome, few teams are. Lakeland will be very strong and should enjoy a good season regardless.
