After Districts
- Jesuit (14-3) – Jesuit coasted through districts, going 2-0 with landslide wins over both Wesley Chapel and Cypress Creek. TLR placed the Tigers at #1 in our preseason poll and they haven’t budged since. We expect Jesuit to continue doing well this season through state playoffs as well.
- Cardinal Mooney (11-6) – The Cougars also went 2-0 in districts, knocking down Boca Ciega and TLR #5 St. Stephen’s. Both games were dominated by Mooney. Oddly enough, Mooney’s first regional game is against SSES, so back-to-back games with the same opponent.
- Calvary Christian (16-1) – The Warriors have been a nice surprise locally. Aside from a 5-point loss to Forest in early March, they have been stacking up nothing but wins. They earned wins in districts against Northside Christian as well as their district’s previous champion Osceola. They’ve advanced as district champs and will face Bishop Verot in the first round.
- Osceola (10-5) – Osceola beat Northeast in districts, then fell to TLR #3 Calvary Christian in the championship 8-6. Unfortunately, their first round opponent in regionals is TLR #1 Jesuit.
- St. Stephen’s (11-2) – The Falcons have an outstanding record for 2023. They only suffered losses to Bishop Verot and Cardinal Mooney, and the Mooney loss was in the district championship. Unfortunately, their first regional opponent with have them back at Cardinal Mooney to face them in back-to-back games.
End of Regular Season
- Jesuit (12-3) – The Tigers won their last regular season game at home against Mitchell 14-10. They have earned a bye for the first round of districts and we expect to see them in the District 9 Championship.
- Cardinal Mooney (9-6) – Mooney notched two more wins to end regular season; 15-1 over Riverview and 10-9 over Ohio’s Springboro. Like Jesuit, Mooney has earned a first round bye in District 11. We expect to see them face TLR #5 St. Stephen’s for the championship at home on Thursday night.
- Calvary Christian (12-1) – Calvary defeated Bartow 14-3 to end regular season. The Warriors have been enjoying a very good season. They have earned a round 1 bye and we expect to see them host Osceola for the District 10 Championship on Thursday. The two teams met on March 24 with Calvary earning a 6-5 win.
- Osceola (9-4) – Osceola finished regular season with a loss to Palm Harbor University. They have secured the #2 seed and a first round bye. If things go as planned, we should see them against Calvary on Thursday for the District 10 Championship.
- St. Stephen’s (10-1) – The Falcons earned a #2 seed and a first round bye for district playoffs. They have been playing very well and we expect them to advance to the District 11 Championship on Thursday where we think they will face Cardinal Mooney for the first time this season.
Week 7
- Jesuit (11-3) – Jesuit split their two games last week, losing 10-6 to Florida 2A #2 Ponte Vedra, then traveling to Florida 1A #6 Lake Highland Prep and returning home with an impressive 11-7 win. The last game on their schedule is on Wednesday when they host TLR #3 Mitchell.
- Cardinal Mooney (7-6) – The Cougars dispatched Florida 2A #15 Gulf Coast last week, 15-6. Their other scheduled game against Osceola was cancelled. Mooney finishes the season at home against Sarasota on Monday, then Springboro Ohio on Tuesday.
- Calvary Christian (11-1) – The Warriors notched three more wins last week against Wiregrass, Lakeland, and Northside Christian. Their last regular season game with be at home on Tuesday against Bartow.
- Osceola (9-3) – Osceola earned a tight win against Lakewood Ranch last week 11-10, then coasted to a 16-1 win against Boca Ciega. Osceola doesn’t show any further games in the regular season.
- St. Stephen’s (10-1) – Like FLN, we see SSES as an impressive team. But also like FLN, we were hoping to see a win against an opponent ranked above them. Last week, the Falcons took down Riverview and Lakewood Ranch. We don’t show any further games on their schedule.
Week 6
- Jesuit (10-2) – The Tigers dropped their matchup against Florida 1A #2 Benjamin by a respectable 14-11 last week, then followed that up with a 15-13 win against TLR #2 Cardinal Mooney. This week Jesuit hosts Florida 2A #2 Ponte Vedra on Wednesday, then Columbus on Saturday.
- Cardinal Mooney (6-6) – The Cougars lost their game Tuesday against Florida 1A #4 Community School of Naples 10-6, then also dropped their game against TLR #1 Jesuit 15-13. Mooney hosts Florida 2A #15 Gulf Coast Tuesday and TLR #4 Osceola on Friday.
- Calvary Christian (8-1) – The Warriors got the win last week against Manatee 19-9, then won in overtime on the road against our previous #3 Osceola. The win swaps the two teams with Calvary now holding the #3 spot. Calvary has three games this week; Tuesday against Wiregrass, Thursday against Lakeland, then Friday on the road against Northside Christian.
- Osceola (7-3) – Osceola went 0-2 last week, dropping games to both TLR #3 Calvary Christian as well as to out of state Shipley School (PA), but both looked winnable for Osceola. Next week shows games against Lakewood Ranch on Tuesday and Boca Ciega on Thursday – both at home.
- St. Stephen’s (8-1) – The Falcons continue to book wins, including last week against Out-of-Door and Cypress Creek – both by huge margins. SSES will finish up regular season this week with games against Sarasota on Tuesday and Lakewood Ranch on Thursday.
Week 5
- Jesuit (9-1) – Two road games (Belen Jesuit & Columbus) and two wins for the Tigers. Jesuit hosts Florida 1A #2 Benjamin School on Wednesday, then travels to TLR #2 Cardinal Mooney on Friday. Jesuit continues to prove they have one of the hardest schedules in the area.
- Cardinal Mooney (6-4) – The Cougars finish up the season playing seven consecutive home games. There are two this week; Tuesday against Florida 1A #4 Community School of Naples and Friday against TLR #1 Jesuit. If you’re in the Sarasota area Friday night, try to catch this match.
- Osceola (7-1) – Osceola hosts Calvary Christian on Friday. That game will be TLR’s #4 vs TLR’s #3. We anticipate a solid game between these two teams.
- Calvary Christian (6-1) – The Warriors host Manatee on Tuesday, then travel to TLR’s #3 Osceola on Friday. As noted above, a #3 vs #4 game should be entertaining and tight.
- St. Stephen’s (6-1) – The Falcons blanked Tampa Catholic last week, then dropped their first game of the season to Bishop Verot, 14-9. SSES hosts Admiral Farragut Monday, Out-of-Door Thursday, then travels to Cypress Creek on Friday.
Week 4
- Jesuit (7-1) – The Tigers looked very good against Plant and came away with a win last week. Only one game showing for next week: on the road against Belen Jesuit.
- Cardinal Mooney (6-3) – No games last week due to spring break. The Cougars visit Florida 1A #2 Lake Highland Prep on Tuesday, then host Florida 2A #1 Lake Mary on Friday. Strength of Schedule rating should rise considerably after those games.
- Osceola (7-1) – Osceola dropped a surprising game to Wiregrass last week, 11-12. We didn’t see that one coming. Osceola is off next week due to spring break.
- Calvary Christian (6-1) – The Warriors earned wins last week against both Berkeley Prep and Sunlake – and continue to look good. No games next week due to spring break.
- St. Stephen’s (5-0) – The Falcons continue the season undefeated with wins against IMG, Manatee, and St. Petersburg. Next week shows games against Tampa Catholic and Bishop Verot.
Week 3
- Jesuit (5-1) – The Tigers took down Berkeley Prep and Georgia’s Woodward Academy last week. Things get a little tougher for Jesuit as they travel to Plant on Tuesday. On Friday the Tigers host Tallahasse’s Maclay School.
- Cardinal Mooney (6-3) – Mooney was able to earn wins last week against Canterbury, Mitchell, and Bartram Trail, but suffered a 19-6 loss to state powerhouse Ponte Vedra. The Cougars show no games next week, likely due to spring break.
- Osceola (6-0) – Wins last week against St. Petersburg, Cypress Creek, and Manatee. Next week’s games include hosting Palm Harbor University on Tuesday, then traveling to Wiregrass on Thursday.
- Calvary Christian (4-1) – Calvary earned a solid win against Lakewood Ranch, but dropped their road game to a strong Forest team 13-8 last week. Calvary will host Berkeley Prep on Tuesday and Sunlake on Thursday.
- St. Stephen’s (2-0) – The Falcons start their season with two wins last week against Bradenton Christian and All Saint’s Academy – both with a score of 16-2. They’ll host IMG on Tuesday, then travel to Manatee on Thursday.
Week 2
- Jesuit (3-1) – Jesuit split their two games last week; they walked away with a very good win against Georgia’s statewide #10 team Harrison 12-9, but lost 11-10 against Lax Numbers’ Florida 2A #2 Lake Mary. The Tigers take on Berkeley Prep Tuesday, then another Georgia opponent (Woodward Academy) on Friday.
- Cardinal Mooney (3-2) – We mentioned Mooney’s games against both Plant and Winter Park in our last update, and we weren’t wrong. Mooney squeaked past Plant in overtime in front of the Cougar faithful, but then dropped their match against Florida 2A #1 Winter Park 19-14. Mooney will be busy next week as they have games against Canterbury on Tuesday, Mitchell on Wednesday, Ponte Vedra on Friday, and Nease on Saturday. The only local game is the one against Mitchell, which will be at Cardinal Mooney.
- Osceola (3-0) – No games for Osceola in week 2. Next week shows them on the road to St. Petersburg, hosting Cypress Creek, then visiting Manatee. We don’t expect this to be a tough week for them.
- Calvary Christian (3-0) – The Warriors pop into our Top 5 with the rough start of Berkeley combined with a very strong start for Calvary. Pay attention to Calvary hosting a good, young Lakewood Ranch squad on Tuesday, followed with a road contest Friday against Forest.
- St. Stephen’s (0-0) – It’s getting hard to keep the Falcons on our Top 5 given they are still without a single game under their belt, but until someone knocks them off, we’re keeping them here – this week.
Week 1
- Jesuit (2-0) – The Tigers started the ’23 season with a 9-6 road win against IMG as well as a big 22-1 home win against Riverview. Next week has Jesuit hosting Georgia’s Harrison as well as FLN’s 2A #3 Lake Mary. If the Tigers are still unbeaten after next week, they will be the talk of Florida.
- Cardinal Mooney (2-1) – Mooney’s first week had them hosting a big 18-2 win over Sarasota, a tough 12-9 loss on the road against FLN’s 1A #3 Bolles, and a big road win against our #5 1A team Berkeley Prep. The Cougars host two huge games next week; Florida #4 Plant on 2/21 and Florida #3 Winter Park on 2/24.
- Osceola (3-0) – We told everyone to keep an eye on the Osceola v Berkeley game in week 1, and we weren’t wrong. Osceola took the double overtime victory by a low-scoring 4-3 match. Osceola also had wins against East Lake and Sarasota. We expect to see them at 4-0 after week two.
- St. Stephen’s (0-0) – The Falcons did not play any games in week 1. We also noticed they won’t play any games in week 2 either. Their first game of the ’23 season will be on 3/3 against All Saint’s Academy.
- Berkeley Prep (0-2) – Berkeley suffered a double overtime, low-scoring 4-3 game to #3 Osceola to begin the season. They also dropped their home opener to #2 Cardinal Mooney. We’ll keep an eye on them during week 2 as they face Lakewood Ranch and Canterbury.
Pre-Season
- Jesuit – The Tigers graduated nine seniors in ’22, including big leaders like Hoppmann-Solario, both Causey brothers, Chase Minacci, Nico Norton, and Zach Mintz. Three of those players made TLR’s 2022 All Region Team and will be nearly impossible to replace. But, as always, Jesuit always backfills with talented, younger players ready to produce. With the bulk of the loss coming from their defensive ranks – including goalie – we may see a bit of a decline in that department for the Tigers. But even if that is the case, Jesuit will likely be eyeing another district championship trophy and maybe even hardware from a regional championship. The early gauge for us will be their February 25 home game against ’22 Florida 2A #5 Lake Mary – a rematch of their 7-5 loss on the same date last year.
- Cardinal Mooney – With only losing four seniors from ’22, the Cougars should be a stronger, more experienced version of last year’s squad. Their sole senior, Sean Laureano (Attack), is already a proven workhorse and will most certainly be the Cougars’ leader this season. Laureano was on TLR’s 2022 All Region Team and we expect to see him on that list again in ’23. Make sure to pay attention to Mooney’s very first game – against Jacksonville’s Bolles (FLN’s #4 in ’22) – to get a better idea of what Sarasota’s best team will be bringing to the field this season.
- Osceola – 2022’s biggest surprise squad returns for their follow-up performance, but will be missing 10 seniors from last year’s great team – including two from our 2022 All Region Team. The biggest hole they have to fill is in goal as senior goalie Dillon Secor is part of the group of 10 that will be missing for ’23. The Warriors split their games against Berkeley Prep last year – losing during the regular season, but winning in the district championship. The two teams will see each other again on February 14 at Osceola. That game could be a barometer for both teams for ’23.
- St. Stephen’s – The Eagles made an impressive 11-4 run in ’22, with two losses coming at the hands of Cardinal Mooney. The kicker here is that they accomplished that feat with 10 players of freshman age or younger. SSES has a better than average shot at doing even better in 2023 as their younger players take their experiences from last season and combine that with the confidence they’ve earned as team. We expect good things from SSES in ’23.
- Berkeley Prep – The Buccaneers only lose five seniors, but within that group are leaders like Henry Smith, Reid Mazzuco, and Jack Bono. Their current roster includes seven players that are freshman (or younger), so the Bucs will be a younger team in ’23. And with games against Mooney, Jesuit, Oak Hall, Plant, and Riverview, their determination and resilience will be tested. As noted already, their initial game against Osceola will be a rematch of their triple-overtime loss in last year’s district championship. TLR is certain both coaches have that game circled.
