Recap
East Lake holds off Sunlake in Final Minute Nail Bitter 11 – 9
East Lake High School was able to fend off power house Sunlake 11 to 9 despite trailing Sunlake by 4 in the early part of the first half. “They got off to a fast start. We played hard too. I like to see my daughter improve.” said, Ms. Sullivan, mother of #29 Kyla Sullivan who got an assist on a beautiful play. The defense was able to clamp down led by #19 Aja Davis, #16 Stephanie Cherin, and first half goalie #30 Hailey Hoard after a sideline talk by the coach at the first half water break. East Lake was able to chip away at the lead and temporarily tie it before Sunlake regained the lead going into half time. Sunlake’s #10 Ally (3 goals), #7 Izzy (2 goals), #17 Kenley (1 goal), and #9 Paige (1 goal) seemed to score at will in the opening half. At the half way point the score was 6 to 5 Sunlake. “We are starting to put things together and my teammates are starting to gain confidence. Cassidy, Sammi, Tori and the rest of the team are working hard to get grounders and make assists. I love them.” Said #25 Samantha Reich who led the scoring with 6 goals. #2 Lauren Holthaus (2), #24 Oliva Clift (2), and # 27 Sammi Chapman (1) also scored. Samantha Reich was referring to #7 Cassidy Mosotto (1 assist), #26 Tori Farkas (1 DC), and #27 Sammi (1 GB).
“We got plenty of good looks, we just need to finish more.” Said Lauren Holthaus who had another good day in assists (2) and goals. One of Lauren assist’s to #25 Samantha Reich was about as good as it can be done when Samantha broke Lauren placed a bullet in Samantha’s left hand wheel house on a full run and after a high fake the shot was true. Each score was hard fought and as the time ticked down the game became more intense. To make matters more desperate East Lake got 4 yellow cards and had to play a girl down for much of the second half but second half goalie #37 Mya Mooney had another good stint making 7 saves. Shutting down their offense proved to be the key and with less than 2 minutes the score was 11 to 6 East Lake. The score was tightened by 3 quick goals by Sunlake late. #18 Emily Kinkead was able to win the last draw and keep the ball away from Sunlake offense to get the win. Despite the loss, Sunlake’s goalie, #26 Syd, is one to watch.
“This was a good win.” Said Head Coach, Susan McGrath.
