East Lake High School Girls Edge Sickles in Last Minute Score

In the second one goal game this week East Lake Girls beat their opponent in the final minutes. “It was exciting and heart stopping, twice”, said Ms. Acevedo Larios, mother of #9 Adriana of the East Lake Girls.  It was a good crowd for the Sickle’s girl–boy lacrosse double header and combined Senior night and the Sickle fans were eager for their home team to close out what looked like a very favorable result.  The score going into the half was 6 – 4 Sickles and with 12 minutes to go it was bleak at 11 – 6.

In the final minutes of the game though, it all changed and East Lake was able to mount a run, lead by #18 Emily Kinkead taking the draw.  The score was tied at 12 all with under two minutes to go off of a goal by #25 Samantha Reich when #2 Lauren Holthaus scored a go ahead goal for East Lake.  Sickles responded quickly with a goal from #10 Juliana Martino to re-tie the game.  East Lake was able to win the next draw and #25 Samantha Reich was able to maneuver through the Sickles defense and toss in what was the final goal of the game.  Sickles mounted a short attack after winning the ensuing draw but #37 Goalie Mya Mooney was able to collect it on an errant pass and run out the clock to seal the game.   “What a Game! Exciting!” said Lauren Holthaus’s Mom.  #25 Samantha Reich had 7, #2 Lauren Holthause had 5 goals, #18 Emily Kinkead and #27 Samantha Chapman had one goal each.  Sickles players Rebekah Hangen had 4 goals and 1 assist and Elena Hangen had 2 goals and 1 assist and Reese Watkins had 3 goals and 3 assists in the losing effort.

Mark Hangen, Sickles Head Coach said, “I knew it was going to be a good game because East Lake has good midfielders.  It came down to draw controls.  We thought we had them but in the end, their girls edged ours.”  Coach Hangen is familiar with both Samantha Reich and Lauren Holthause because he coaches one of the Limitless lacrosse club teams and both girls play for that club along with players on his own high school team.

Earlier in the week, East Lake Girls also got the better of Calvary Christian which also had Limitless teammates playing each other.  The score was more modest at 7 – 6.  Also in the last 2 minutes, the go ahead goal was scored by #25 Samantha Reich to the uproar of the home crowd at East Lake.  “That game was intense and a great win for us.” Said East Lake head coach, Susan McGrath.
