Pre-Season
- Steinbrenner – The lady Warriors had a fantastic 2022 season, compiling a 21-2 record. Highlights of the season were their spectacular 9-8 come from behind home win over Lake Highland Prep as well as their home Regional Final 14-9 come from behind win over rival Newsome. The third time is the charm as we have heard said before. We fully expect the lady Warriors to make a third trip to the State Finals in Naples in May. Led by Senior Midfielder Taylor Lapointe (Northwestern) and a host of other committed players in their super talented 2023 class we feel they are in position to win a 2A State Title. Players to watch – All of them! Their 2023 class has numerous Division 1, 2, and 3 commits. We recommend you go and check out some of their games. Games to watch: home Newsome Regional Final rematch on March 30 at 5:00 p.m. and their away rematch with Lake Highland Prep on March 21 at 6:00 p.m.
- Newsome – The lady Wolves finished 2022 with a 15-5 record. Three of those losses came against top ranked Steinbrenner, all by very narrow margins. Newsome’s season ending loss came from Steinbrenner in the Regional Final where the lady Wolves dominated 15 minutes of the 2nd half until going man down where Steinbrenner took full advantage, pulling ahead in the closing minutes. Led by senior goalie Cassidy Bauman and junior attack Gracie Ochoa (Mercer University) we expect the lady Wolves to have another strong season. We feel they have enough to win their district, but can they beat Steinbrenner in regional play? We will see. Talented senior midfielder Sam Swanovich (Rutgers) is not currently showing on their roster (MaxPreps) as of the writing of this article. Games to watch – Regional Final rematch at Steinbrenner March 30 at 5:00 p.m. and Lake Highland Prep away on March 17.
- Plant – The lady Panthers finished 2022 with a 12-6 record using a very young team. Even though they lost in Districts to rival Newsome, they still qualified for regional play, but ended their season with a 9-8 road loss to Gulf Coast. The lady Panthers are definitely a team on the rise. We feel if they don’t make waves this season, they will be a team to reckon with next season. Led by seniors D/M Anna Castro and A/M Sophia Gray, this team can compete with the top teams. They may still be a year away from making a run. Up and coming sophomores attack Mckenzey Craig and defense Ryann McCleod are players to watch. Games to watch: home match up against Steinbrenner February 22 at 7:00 p.m. and home game against Ponte Vedra on March 31 at 5:00 p.m.
- Sickles –The lady Gryphons ended 2022 with a very successful 16-5 record. Coach Hangen’s tough schedule definitely paid off. Opening with Newsome and Plant for the first two games of the season is not for the faint of heart, but it was evident that it was worthwhile with them qualifying for regional play and getting their first regional win 6-5 over Riverview. Sickles is a very senior laden team this season and could make a run. They will compete in their district, but it will be tough to overcome Newsome and Plant. Player to watch: sophomore goalkeeper Emma Zimmerman is tough to beat. Games to watch: you don’t have to wait long because they open at home with district rival Plant on February 14 at 7:00 p.m. They will also play road games against Newsome and Steinbrenner.
- Riverview –Finishing 2022 with a 12-7 record, the lady Rams lost a heartbreaker to Sickles 6-5 at home in the regional quarter final to end their season. The lady Rams have another very challenging schedule for 2023. Led by junior midfield/draw specialist Susan Lowther (Ohio State), they should be the top team in District 11 2A. Manatee girls may have something to say about that, but we will see when they meet on February 23. Players to watch: junior Susan Lowther, sophomore midfielder Caroline Steinwachs. Games to watch: a lot of great teams on their schedule – home game against Plant on February 27, St. Stephen’s March 2 at 6:00 p.m., Gulf Coast on the road March 25 at 9:00 a.m., and Newsome on March 27 at a neutral site at 6:00 p.m.
